General Suggestions & Resources
This page was created as part of a talk for the Southern Management Association Late Stage Doctoral Consortium (2022) on Leveraging Your Network. The powerpoint presentation for that talk can be found here.
Additionally, here is document full of suggestions regarding timeline, process, travel, and more that I wrote right after my rookie year job market quest.

It was another week of whipping out applications. I've included the places I've applied down below along with the type of position I applied for in case that's relevant for you. I expect the pace of these will slow down after Academy. Thanks for bearing with me right now; I know it's tedious to keep up with these requests!
Thus far I have interviews with the following schools. I'm hoping a few more applications will convert to interviews next week.
I'll make sure to send you an update before Academy and will specify who else I would like the chance to chat with. I leave on Thursday and will be there through the following Tuesday.
I intend to apply to more of the elite schools in the coming weeks. I know I likely won't be in their top tier of candidates but the amount of effort it takes at this point it's relatively minimal. Please let me know if you've heard of a position I ought to apply to that you don't see in these lists.

I hope this finds you well. I had previously said I would reach out when I was on the job market and here we are. The date has come up quickly!
I seem to remember you saying that the setting of my dissertation (U.S. craft distilleries) may overlap with some of _____'s initiatives, particularly those in ______. Please let me know if you have some time during Academy this year to chat more about that and whether I might be a good fit with what you are doing there.
Attached you'll find my CV. More information as to my research and teaching can be found on my website: www.shannonyounger.com . I'm also happy to provide those for you in PDF form if helpful.

As members of my dissertation committee, I am writing to share my job market materials in advance of AoM. You can find my most up-to-date CV, research statement, and teaching statement on my website: www.shannonyounger.com Please let me know if you would prefer these in pdf form and I can provide those for you. Hopefully they give you some more insight into how I see myself as a researcher and teacher and more details as to my dissertation work and my other research projects in progress.
I have been working on submitting applications for jobs, particularly for those schools interviewing at AoM. I have been updating a spreadsheet with the jobs I intend to apply for as they become posted. Should you care to take a look and have thoughts/comments on these positions, the spreadsheet can be found here. _____, ______, and _____ have all provided feedback. Feel free to do the same if you have time but no pressure. I know you are both busy and will make sure to reach out if there are specific schools I would like your insight on.
I will be in touch later this fall regarding my dissertation but wanted to keep you in the loop with where I am at otherwise. Please let me know if you have thoughts or suggestions as to how I can best maximize my efforts and increase my likelihood of getting a good job. I am primarily looking at entrepreneurship and OT positions with the potential for some strategy or macro OB positions as well.

I'm reaching out to ask if you would consider writing a letter of recommendation for me for the upcoming job market. There are a few reasons I consider you to be an asset in this regard and can provide a unique perspective:
Research: We've been working together on research for three years now. You've seen my transition as a researcher—first from a second-year with little experience and no idea what she was doing to a co-author in a more well-rounded sense. This is a particularly unique perspective for two reasons: 1) you're not my advisor; 2) with no one else have I moved not one but two papers from idea to submission.
Distance: My other two letter writers have both been at Wisconsin. My hope is that your geographic distance will signal my ability to work independently and that you could speak to my communication style, responsiveness, and responsibility as a co-author.
You: I respect you and the work you do tremendously. In preparing my job market materials, I've reflected on my work and learning process. Doing so, I've become even more grateful for your willingness to teach me and bring me along on your ideas. It would mean a lot if one of my letters of support came from you.
I can't begin to tell you how valuable it has been to learn from you—both through our research papers and through your thoughts on other aspects of this profession. Considering the prominent place you've had as a mentor and co-author, I would feel remiss if I did not at least ask if you would write a letter of recommendation.

In making your decision, perhaps these materials will help provide some additional insight as to how I see myself and my work oriented within our broader field. My hope is that I will have my letters of recommendation collected for my packet by late July/early August. I plan apply for early job postings (some as early as July), particularly before Academy.

I'm assuming this request comes as no surprise but would you consider writing me a letter of recommendation for the job market? Specifically, I see you being able to provide a unique perspective in the following ways:
Our working relationship: You took me on in the midst of a weird situation and, while we have not worked particularly closely together, I would like to think that I have exhibited autonomy, initiative, and an openness to feedback—all of which are characteristics I think others would find valuable in a future colleague and researcher. You can provide unique insight as you had very little information about me previously but have hopefully found me a to be a reasonable human being and someone you wouldn't mind having in the office next door.
Department: During my time at Wisconsin, I have tried to be a good colleague and a team player. I am consistent in attending brown bags, supporting younger students, sharing institutional knowledge, and generally being a reliable (maybe even fun) member of the department. You have seen my progression from first-year to fifth-year and can attest to the role of my membership in the department.
Teaching: Part of being a member of the department has been taking on multiple teaching roles, some of which have been in a traditional classroom setting while others have been much more varied (see my teaching statement and CV). In addition to those experiences, I have mentored five undergraduate research assistants. My hope is that you could highlight the role my teaching experience has played in the broader department.
